Frequently asked questions

What is Critical Running Speed (CRS) and how is it calculated?
Critical Running Speed is the maximum pace you can sustain over an extended effort, derived from two timed test runs — a short effort (~3 min) and a longer one (~20 min). It is the running equivalent of Critical Power for cycling, rooted in the critical-speed model (Monod & Scherrer 1965). All six training zones in Run Analytics are calibrated from your individual CRS.
What is Training Stress Score (TSS) for running?
TSS quantifies the training demand of a session as a function of its duration and intensity relative to your CRS threshold. Sessions at or above CRS score proportionally higher. TSS feeds the CTL/ATL/TSB performance-management chart based on Banister's (1991) impulse-response model.
What do CTL, ATL and TSB mean?
CTL (Chronic Training Load) is a 42-day exponentially weighted average representing accumulated fitness. ATL (Acute Training Load) is a 7-day average representing recent fatigue. TSB (Training Stress Balance) equals CTL minus ATL: a positive TSB means you are rested and ready to race; a negative TSB means you are carrying training fatigue.
Does Run Analytics work with Garmin, Apple Watch and Polar?
Yes. Run Analytics reads Apple Watch data automatically via Apple Health HealthKit. It also supports Garmin .FIT file import for athletes who train with a Garmin device. Any device that exports workout data to Apple Health is compatible.
Is my running data stored in the cloud?
No. All calculations run locally on your iPhone. No data is uploaded to any server, no account is required, and the app works without an internet connection. Your training data stays entirely on your device.
